Free Site Inspection Checklist for Construction Projects

A thorough site inspection requires a systematic approach. This checklist covers the key areas to review during a construction site visit. Adapt it to your project type and local requirements.

Tip: Use this checklist alongside a photo documentation app. For each item, take a photo showing the condition and pin it to the floor plan. This creates a complete record that can be turned into a professional report in one tap.

Pre-Inspection Preparation

Review project scope, specifications, and drawings
Check previous inspection reports and outstanding items
Load floor plans into inspection app
Charge phone/tablet and verify camera works
Bring PPE (hard hat, safety vest, steel-toe boots, glasses)
Confirm access permissions and site contact information
Review weather forecast for outdoor work areas

Site Safety

Perimeter fencing and signage in place
Access points controlled and secure
Workers wearing appropriate PPE
Scaffolding properly erected with guardrails
Excavations properly shored or sloped
Fall protection in place for elevated work
Fire extinguishers accessible and current
First aid kit present and stocked
Emergency exits clear and marked
Electrical panels locked and labeled
Housekeeping — walkways clear of debris

Adapting for Different Project Types

Residential: Focus on interior finishes, home systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical), and buyer-facing cosmetic items.

Commercial: Add ADA compliance, fire code compliance, elevator/escalator systems, and tenant improvement specs.

Infrastructure: Replace interior sections with earthwork, drainage, utilities, paving, and environmental compliance.
